Introduction
The Mersey Valley begins in Stockport and runs some 20-river miles to Irlam before entering the Manchester Ship Canal. Back in the 1960's the valley had numerous rubbish tips, sewage works and derelict area's. Local Authorities have improved the landscape planted many trees and encourages recreational pursuits. Today the valley is popular with walkers, runners and is a favourite haunt of naturalists.
Jackson's Boat

The river Mersey is the traditional boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire and the Jackson's bout inn is a very popular pub by the riverside. A footbridge call Jackson's boat was built in 1816.
Chorlton EES

Withington sewage works closed in 1972 after occupying Chorlton EES for over 50 years. Today it is one of the largest nature reserves in the Mersey Valley with excellent footpaths for easy access. A "Great Place for walking your dog".
The Bridgewater Canal

The 3rd Duke of Bridgewater built the Bridgewater canal; coal was transported in barges from collieries in Worsly to Castlefield in Manchester. Now the canal is a great place for boating, angling, walking and having a run.
